The NHL reported on Smashfest V held Thursday and raising money for The Katie Moore and The Steve Moore Foundations. Over the past five years they’ve raised over half a million for these causes.

The Katie Moore Foundation is named after Dominic’s late wife who died in 2013 from a rare form of liver cancer. The foundation funds research and advocacy for rare cancer. The Steve Moore Foundation works on concussion prevention and research treatment for serious head injuries. The foundation is named after Steve Moore, Dominic’s brother, who’s career ended abruptly after a head injury.

Smashfest centers around ping-pong because it is a dressing room pastime in the NHL. Moore says: “Pingpong is a huge part of locker room culture. More and more guys are in it to win it. We now have five guys who have brought their own custom paddles in their own little carrying case. Those guys are here to win.”

Seeing people come together to play, have a good time, and support two great causes is always a win.

This is about awareness and a collaborative effort with everyone coming together for a common purpose,” Moore said. “We can’t believe it is the fifth year for this. It has grown. The thing about this event is it starts with … trying to make an impact on some neglected and underfunded causes. But when you’re here you aren’t thinking about that. You’re just having fun. That’s our mission, to have everyone leave here with a smile on their face.”
