Former Maple Leaf Dominic Moore has been working to fight rare cancers, fundraising for research through his annual Smashfest ping pong charity tournament.Dominic Moore leverages Smashfest, an annual celebrity ping-pong tournament featuring current and former NHL players, to raise funds for rare cancer and concussion research. The Star commends this event as a “as model for pro athletes who want to ‘give back’ or do more for their communities.”

These funds have revolutionize rare cancer research by partnering with the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and is beginning to impact concussion treatment through the Steve Moore Foundation with the Robarts Research Institute at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University.

These causes are deeply personal and underrepresented funding wise. The work with the Broad Institute in tackling rare cancer has seen great strides from funds raised by Smashfest.

Dr. Jesse Boehm, the scientific director of the Broad Institute’s Cancer Dependency Map: “Dom has taken such a deep intellectual interest in the project and in the people since the beginning. He understands the science. He’s put on lab gloves and a lab coat and been part of the lab team. The folks in the lab are so encouraged to see someone like that really care about their research. It really motivated them.”
